Upgrading SIMetrix

Please read the following notes if you are upgrading from an earlier version of SIMetrix. These notes refer to upgrading to a new feature release. This always involves a change of version number, for example, 5.5 to 5.6 or 5.6 to 6.0. For information about service updates which are usually just fix bugs, please see Update Procedure

Installation

Install in the usual way to upgrade but be sure to install to a new folder. New versions of SIMetrix are designed to be used alongside older versions allowing a staged migration to a new release if required.

Configuration Migration

When you start SIMetrix for the first time, SIMetrix will detect if you have an older version (5.0 or later) already installed and offer to migrate your configuration from that older version to the new.

The migration process will copy across most settings from the old to new version as follows:

  1. Model library subject to the condition that the system library location for the old version has not been moved from its default. Only the links to the library are copied; no files are moved or copied in this process
  2. Symbol library subject to the condition that the system library location for the old version has not been moved from its default. Only the links to the library are copied; no files are moved or copied in this process
  3. System symbol library edits. If you edit a system symbol library file, those changes do not overwrite the library file but are instead stored in a separate file. These changes are copied across in the migration process
  4. Model/symbol associations
  5. Preference settings such as fonts, colours and window positions
  6. Custom graph measurements
  7. Expressions stored in the Define Curve dialog box history
  8. Menu changes made through the GUI
  9. Most option settings defined by the File | Options | General dialog and also using the Set script command . The majority that relate to directory locations are not migrated

Migration Report

The migration process will generate a report describing what has been migrated and will also list some items that could not be migrated. Press cntrl-Q to view this report after SIMetrix has started or open file or see file migrationreport.txt located in My Documents\SIMetrix or $HOME/simetrix in Linux . (This definition of cntrl-Q is temporary and will not be kept for future sessions.)
