This page describes common licensing problems and their solutions.
This page is still being developed. We have some information on resolving standalone and portable licenses below which we hope you will find helpful.
"I have used pretty much all of the simulators out there, Hspice, HPspice, PSpice, Mspice, Accusim, Spectre, SpectreRF and the list goes on... but none are as simple, straightforward to use as SIMetrix."
Where is my license file?
If you have received a physical CD, you will find the license file located in the SETUP directory and called license.lic. You may also find this in the CD's License directory depending on what version you are using.
When installing a Windows version from the CD the license will be installed automatically. But if you later download a new release, you will need to manually install the license file. With Linux versions you will always need to manually install the license.
You will also find the license file located in the License directory under the SIMetrix root directory of an existing SIMetrix Windows installation. (E.g. at c:\Program Files\SIMetrix600\License). With Linux the license is installed at $HOME/.simetrix/license .
I have found the license file but it doesn't seem to work
Let SIMetrix startup normally. Even if the license is invalid, you can always get the command shell to display, although the program will not be 100% functional.
Select menu Help | License Diagnostics...
This should display some information indicating the cause of the failure. Here are some of the errors you might get:
The license file is incorrect for this system. This might be because the dongle is not plugged in or because the license is intended for another machine.
- Apart from the reasons given, you will also get this error if the dongle driver is not installed or if there is some problem with the dongle driver. Check that the red LED on the dongle is lit. If it isn't then there is some problem with the driver. You may need to install an updated driver - follow dongle driver install link below. Otherwise try reinstalling the driver. If this still doesn't work, check that your USB port is functioning correctly.
For the dongle drivers and install instructions, please visit: Installing Dongle Driver for Windows or Installing Dongle Driver for Linux- You might be using the wrong dongle. If you have purchased a number of portable licenses you may find that you need to use the correct dongle with the correct license. Note that you can merge all your portable license files to make a universal license that will work with all your dongles. See Merging Licenses for further info.
- If you have a "node-locked" license, this error means you are using the wrong machine. Node-locked licenses are locked to one machine according to its ethernet adapter address (aka MAC address). So the license will only work with that machine. You may also get this error if the adapter has been disabled for some reason.
The license does not support this version of SIMetrix. Contact sales for assistance. Select menu Help|Reinstall License... to install a new license.
This means that you need a new license to run this version. If you have current maintenance then you should have already been sent this when your maintenance was renewed. If you cannot find the license, please contact sales for further advice.
If you don't have current maintenance, then you may need to purchase this in order to get the correct license. Contact sales for information.
You cannot run SIMetrix from a remote X-server (e.g. VNC) with a stand alone or portable license. You must use a network license in this application.
This only applies to Linux versions. The license model only supports use from the local display i.e. the display connected to directly to the machine. You need a network license for remote X-server operation.
